Mount Rinjani Trekking Insurance

While our team at Hans Lombok Trekking does everything in our power to ensure a safe and secure expedition, Mount Rinjani is an active volcano in a remote, high-altitude environment. The trails are steep, weather can shift rapidly, and physical exhaustion is a reality of the climb.

Because of these inherent risks, Mount Rinjani National Park strictly regulates trekking insurance to ensure emergency response protocols are funded and ready.

The Official National Park Insurance Tiers

As part of your mandatory national park registration, you must be covered by insurance. Following a safety overhaul in March 2026, the National Park authority now offers two specific tiers of official local insurance:

1. Basic (Regular) Insurance

• Cost: IDR 10,000 (Included in most standard trekking packages).

• Coverage: Provides very basic financial assistance for local hospital visits in Lombok and standard ground evacuation.

• The Catch: It is severely limited. The medical limits are low, and it DOES NOT cover helicopter evacuation.

2. Premium Insurance (New for 2026) Introduced to drastically improve safety and emergency response times, the Premium tier is a comprehensive local policy specifically designed for the risks of Mount Rinjani.

• Cost: IDR 290,000 (approx. $18 USD) per trekker.

• Key Coverage: Includes ground search and rescue (SAR), higher medical treatment support, and most importantly, helicopter evacuation up to IDR 260,000,000 for life-threatening emergencies (such as bone fractures or severe altitude sickness).

• Requirement: If you do not have your own personal travel insurance that explicitly covers high-altitude helicopter rescue, you are required by the park to purchase this Premium tier.

Do You Need Your Own Personal Insurance?

While the new local Premium Insurance is excellent for on-the-mountain emergencies (like a helicopter rescue), it does not cover standard travel disruptions like flight cancellations, lost baggage, or treatment at private international hospitals in Bali or your home country.

For true peace of mind, we strongly recommend arriving with your own comprehensive personal travel insurance. If your personal policy covers high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation, you will not need to purchase the park’s Premium Insurance—you will only need the Basic tier for registration.

What Your Personal Policy MUST Cover: When purchasing travel insurance for this expedition, read the fine print regarding altitude. Many standard policies automatically void your coverage if you hike above 2,500 meters. The summit of Mount Rinjani is 3,726 meters.

Ensure your policy explicitly includes:

1. High-Altitude Trekking: Coverage up to at least 4,000 meters (13,123 feet).

2. Emergency Medical Evacuation: Coverage for helicopter rescue from remote terrain.

3. Medical Expenses: Coverage for treatment of injuries or Altitude Sickness (AMS).

Choosing a Provider

We do not sell personal insurance directly, but many of our past guests have successfully used companies that specialize in adventure travel. Providers like World Nomads or Global Rescue typically offer “Adventure” or “Explorer” tiers specifically designed for high-altitude mountaineering. Always verify the specifics of the policy directly with the provider before purchasing.

Important Note: Before you begin your trek, our base camp team will ask you to provide either your Personal Insurance policy details or we will assist you in purchasing the local Premium Insurance for park entry. This ensures that in the unlikely event of an emergency, we can act immediately on your behalf.
