A successful summit of Mount Rinjani isn’t just about physical endurance; it’s about the team that supports you. At Hans Lombok Trekking, we firmly believe that our guides and porters are the true heart and soul of the mountain. They are not just staff—they are local experts, storytellers, camp chefs, and your mountain family.
When you trek with us, you are in the hands of professionals who have spent their lives on these slopes.
Our lead guides are your navigators, motivators, and safety officers. All of our guides are fully licensed by Mount Rinjani National Park and hold current First Aid and CPR certifications.
What they do for you:
Pacing and Motivation: They know exactly how to read your energy levels. They will set a sustainable pace, tell you when to push, and enforce rest breaks to ensure you acclimatize properly.
Safety Monitoring: They are trained to spot the early signs of Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS) and will make critical decisions regarding weather shifts and trail safety.
Cultural Connection: Fluent in English, they love sharing the rich history, folklore, and geology of Rinjani and the local Sasak culture.
If the guides are the brain of the expedition, the porters are the immense, beating heart. It is impossible to overstate the strength and resilience of these men.
While you hike with a light daypack, our porters carry the heavy burden of the expedition—often up to 25kg (55 lbs) of tents, sleeping bags, thick mattresses, cooking stoves, fresh food, and water. They carry this load using a traditional pikulan (a sturdy bamboo pole balanced across the shoulders) and often hike in rubber boots or even flip-flops, moving much faster than the average trekker.
What they do for you:
Camp Setup: They race ahead of the group to ensure that when you arrive exhausted at the crater rim, your tent is already pitched and your sleeping mattress is ready.
Mountain Chefs: Our porters are also incredible cooks! They will have hot sweet tea waiting for you upon arrival, followed by freshly prepared, hot meals three times a day to replenish your calories.
Carrying the Load: Our standard porters carry all communal gear and food. (Note: If you want someone to carry your personal backpack with your clothes, you can hire an Extra Personal Porter for an additional daily fee).
The trekking industry can sometimes be exploitative, but Hans Lombok Trekking operates differently. We are deeply committed to the ethical treatment of our staff.
Fair Wages: We pay our guides and porters well above the regional standard.
Weight Limits: We strictly adhere to the National Park’s weight limit regulations for porters to prevent injury.
Proper Gear: We ensure our staff has adequate clothing, shelter, and food during the trek.
When you book with us, you are directly supporting fair-trade tourism and the livelihoods of local families in Senaru and Sembalun.
Tipping Custom: While tipping is entirely at your discretion, it is customary and highly appreciated to leave a combined tip for your guide and porter team at the end of the trek as a token of gratitude for their hard work.
