Whale Shark Tour from Lombok

While Hans Lombok Trekking is your trusted expert for conquering the summit of Mount Rinjani, we also offer an unforgettable aquatic adventure. Take a break from the mountain trails and journey with us to neighboring Sumbawa to swim alongside the gentle giants of the ocean — the magnificent whale shark.

Because these creatures are not found directly off the coast of Lombok, this tour is a multi-day overland and sea journey to the pristine waters of Saleh Bay (Teluk Saleh). We handle all the logistics, transfers, and accommodations so you can focus entirely on this once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounter.

The Saleh Bay Experience

Saleh Bay is a massive, calm body of water in Sumbawa and one of Indonesia’s most reliable, year-round habitats for whale sharks.

Unlike heavily commercialized spots in other parts of the world, the whale sharks here naturally gather around traditional floating fishing platforms known as bagan. When the local fishermen haul up their nets just before sunrise, the whale sharks congregate to feed on the small fish and plankton that slip through.

You will board a local motorized wooden boat in the dark, sailing out to the platforms just as the sun rises. Once there, you can slip into the water and snorkel mere meters away from these massive, slow-moving filter feeders.

Your Tour Options

Depending on your travel style and budget, we offer two main ways to experience the whale sharks from Lombok:

1. The 2-Day / 1-Night Overland Adventure

This is our most popular and budget-friendly option, perfect for those who want a quick, guided excursion.

  • The Journey: We pick you up from your Lombok hotel and drive to the eastern harbor for a 2-hour ferry crossing to Sumbawa. From there, it is a scenic 3-to-4-hour drive to the coastal village of Labuan Jambu, where you will spend the night in a local homestay or basic transit hotel.

  • The Encounter: Wake up at 3:30 AM to catch a local boat out to the bagan. You will have about 1.5 to 2 hours in the water with the sharks at sunrise before heading back to shore for breakfast and beginning the overland journey back to Lombok.

2. The 3-Day / 2-Night Liveaboard Cruise

For those who want to skip the long drives and turn the transit into a holiday itself, we offer a multi-day boat cruise.

  • The Journey: Board a comfortable cruising vessel from Lombok and sail directly to Sumbawa. Along the way, you will stop to snorkel pristine coral reefs and visit hidden waterfalls on islands like Moyo.

  • The Encounter: The boat moors directly in Saleh Bay overnight. You wake up exactly where the whale sharks are, completely eliminating the need for middle-of-the-night transit.

Responsible Tourism & Rules

Protecting these incredible animals is our top priority. Whale sharks are harmless to humans, but we enforce strict conservation guidelines during all of our tours:

  • No Touching: You must maintain a safe distance of 3 to 4 meters. Their skin is covered in sharp denticles that can cause abrasions, and touching stresses the animal.

  • No Flash Photography: Bright lights can severely disorient the sharks.

  • Reef-Safe Sunscreen Only: To protect the delicate marine ecosystem and the sharks’ food supply, standard chemical sunscreens are strictly prohibited. We highly recommend wearing a rash guard instead.
